i have heard quite a lot about second life - from dwight on the office playing in wolrd, to CSI and SVU episodes dedicated to the dangers of the game. i never quite understood how it could be so addicting, but after exploring the world for myself, i now get it...!
Holly's blog
loving LibraryThing and Rollyo!
for christmas this year, my dad is getting his personal library cataloged on LibraryThing from me. he has a large collection of first editions and inscribed books, and through LiraryThing he can find others with similar works and discover new titles by his favorite authors...I am really excited about being able to do this for him - he has wanted a "card catalog" of his library for a long time, but there was never a good tool to use (except good old pen and paper!)...and the price couldnt be better (just dont tell him please!) ;)
the changing face of facebook
i held off joining facebook for a few years after it first came out.
the thought of a self-representational profile in cyber space made me
anxious. however, giving into the social pressures of the undergraduate
population of nyu, i finally joined facebook a little under four years ago (can
you believe it has been around that long?!). back then, it was more a tool of
procrastination and "stalking" friends more than anything else, but
today it is a place for making business connections, promoting events and job
using flickr for research...
Enjoy this song about web2.0! if you click around YouTube, there are lots of
songs and spoofs about web2.0 and the ability of it to create celebrities (ex:
the boy who sings a song "chocolate rain" - he posted it up on YouTube,
and pretty soon john mayer and sherrod small were doing a cover of it and he appeared
on the jimmy kimmel show! all from "broadcasting himself" singing and
playing the keyboard in his house...amazing!).
LIBSpace - Join Us!
Holly, Katie, Katy and Stephanie's final project...
a social network for LIS students and professionals intrigued by the 2.0 world...
anxiety2.0
so i was all set to log into the class chat last night, but when i signed on (or tried to!), i kept getting a message saying i was not authorized to participate!
google docs
i have been using google docs now for a few weeks, and am loving the way it saves me time and inbox clutter. i used to email everything to myself as a way of saving files or backing them up, but then my papers and thesis ideas would be lost in the shuffle of all my other email. with the combination of google docs and tagging, i now have a virtual reference desk for myself where i can access, read and edit, from anywhere, all my important files. it is truly a great combination of tools for someone who is never at the same computer.
tagging vs. cataloging
i have been thinking a lot about social tagging and what a great discovery tool it is - you keep finding new things that are somehow related to the original tag you were exploring, but maybe someone else added another tag on the same site/article so then you find yourself roaming to that tag and so on...
