It was really interesting to see the profile of some members of the class on facebook. The information is well organized, informative and interesting. I can see why it is referred to as a social network, it allows one to share a commom space with friends and relatives.
Social Network
Facebook and Myspace
I was pretty skeptical about facebook in the begginig and I didn't join until my senior year of college. Even then a friend of mine actually had to sign me up because I refused to do it myself. Now I use facebook for practical purposes like organizing events. It is so much easier than calling 30 people and so much cheaper than sending 100 text messages. With myspace it was the same deal, a friend justr recently signed me up and I like it because I am able to find a lot of cool music.
Facebook wins...in my book.
I joined MySpace about 2 years ago, and have enjoyed the fact that it has kept me in touch with old friends that live elsewhere and let's me chat with my fiends here in a different format with personal messages and sharing pictures. I just joined Facebook last Thursday night in class and have been hooked, for lack of a better word. It has allowed me to contact even more friends from high school and college than I have found in MySpace, which is great because I really enjoy keeping in touch with people and hearing their stories.
Colleges Embrace Social Media
An interesting article on the front page of The Journal News (my home paper) today. "School Search - networking it" about the latest trend in college admissions. They are embracing the use of social media - blogs, message boards, podcasts, and socialnetworking sites...

"...social networking profiles were more likely to be viewed (by colleges) when it comes to competitive scholarships."
the changing face of facebook
i held off joining facebook for a few years after it first came out.
the thought of a self-representational profile in cyber space made me
anxious. however, giving into the social pressures of the undergraduate
population of nyu, i finally joined facebook a little under four years ago (can
you believe it has been around that long?!). back then, it was more a tool of
procrastination and "stalking" friends more than anything else, but
today it is a place for making business connections, promoting events and job
Class Facebook Group
I have created a class group in Facebook for those who have decided to create Facebook accounts for the homework assignment. If everyone who from the class who is on the network joins, it will make friending easier.
Facebook Editorial
The Times ran an op-ed piece titled "The Fakebook Generation" that gives one woman's take on the limitations and what she preceives as hype in Facebook.
