there's a place for us

Do you think that libraries should be in virtual worlds such as Second Life, why or why not?

As I took the Stanford Train on their tour through part of SL, I thought that SL really lends itself to design: Art students, architects, and web designers must love it there. But I can also see a place for libraries, especially academic and special libraries. Wherever there is a need and a use for information, a library should be involved.

using custom search engines as an educational tool

What are some innovative ways that libraries and librarians could use custom search engines?

A social search engine such as Rollyo could be used in libraries as an educational tool in the following ways:

My Spiritual Healing Rollyo

Well, I got a little panicky when I realized I had to create my own search engine. What of? But I have had this idea in my mind for awhile and so I decided now would be the time to practice it. I've created my Rollyo search engine called Spiritual Healing Search and began adding some of the websites I use. There are plenty more and I plan to use this as a work in progress.

Enjoy!

Library Thing is my new friend

Tagged:  •    •    •

Hi Everyone,

I am already addicted to Library Thing. As I went along and searched for my favorite books, I had to remember to stop to get the rest of my homework done. What I really like about Library Thing is I keep thinking of practical uses for it. For example, my friends sometimes send out their booklists, but they send them as text on a Word doc. " Boo" (as they say in the Common Craft videos). But putting their booklists on Library Thing and sending out the link, now that's much better. And prettier too!

It's in our job description to be knowledgeable

Tagged:  •    •    •

Why do you think it is important for librarians to be knowledgeable about social networking?

Librarians are expected to know how information is managed. Organizing and disseminating information is part of our job description.

How then do social networking sites allow us to organize information?

Here are a few examples of how social networking sites allow you to organize information:

Flickr: On Flickr you can organize photos into albums, share, tag, upload to library webpages and blogs.

my social networking accounts

Hello everyone,

I enjoyed the lecture and learned a lot about facebook. I've been using it for a number of months now, almost a year, and half the time can't find what I want. After the webcast I was finally able to understand the Applications and was also able to get a boxes tab, which I didn't have before. I really like how Ellyssa said that the whole purpose of social networking is to get out there. Sometimes I forget and try to make more things private than they need to be.

media sharing in libraries: literacy and photo contests

Tagged:  •    •    •

What are some interesting ways you could envision your organization using media sharing?

Ever since I saw LAPL's adult literacy webpage with photos and voices of their adult learners, I wanted to use this idea for our literacy program. We could do the same thing and share photos of our learners or we could create videos of our learners speaking about their life and how the literacy program has helped them.

favorites on flickr and youtube

This was fun. I'm still working with youtube to figure out what buttons to click on to navigate. It is easier than flickr which seems to have more options that I am interested in using right now. After watching our webcast I went back in and tagged some photos. This is neat! I am especially intrigued by the ability of flickr to recognize what type of camera is used. And the map feature is fabulous.
