Social Searching in the Library

Tagged:  •    •    •

Though I have just started experimenting with social search engines and custom searches, I am extremely excited about the possibilities for this application in a library setting.  Not only do social search engines allow you to customize the search parameters in regard to which websites will be searched by the engine, but some of them also allow you to generate an embeddable widget.  These two things make for a powerful tool that is just waiting to be utilized by libraries.

Media Sharing as an Instructional Service

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

Media sharing applications like Flickr and Youtube are excellent tools which can be utilized by libraries in a number of ways.  By now we are all familiar with the fairly straightforward examples of media sharing, like creating an online photo album in Flickr, but there are also other ways by which libraries can benefit from media sharing applications.  In particular, I am thinking about how libraries can utilize media sharing as a tool for

All aboard for tagging the OPAC

Tagged:  •    •    •

I am a strong advocate for libraries that allow patrons to tag their OPACs.  This does not mean that I want user tags to become the primary method for content classification, or information seeking strategies.  Rather, I think user tags should act as a secondary resource for both of these things.
