What we learn from social networking sites

I've seen some really great responses to the question, "Why do you think it's important for librarians to be knowledgeable about social networking?" from sare_sage, AmyR, & phoeft.  Here is my attempt:

Running into a wall--the firewall

Working in a school environment, where student safety is paramount, the district firewall is a definite obstacle as it blocks most media sharing sites including youtube and flickr.  In fact, our Information Technology Division has decided to implement a "white list."  Istead of specifically blocking sites that considered inappropriate, they created a specific list of sites that are approrpriate for our network.
