Do you think social bookmarking could be beneficial to the LIS field? Why or why not?
Social bookmarking is another way to aggregate information. The collective 'hive' vets and organizes information to the benefit of other information seekers. This collective effort accomplishes a herculean task that cannot be left solely to information professionals.
It is of interest to information scientists to study the way these folksonomies evolve -- it gives clues to the way users organize and seek information. As opposed to a top-down classification system, tagging originates from the user and is a direct link to a more vernacular vocabulary.

Hi Lynn,
I really liked your point about tagging being a "direct link to a more vernacular vocabulary." One of the frustrating things about library subject headings is the vocabulary, it's not very modern and can be kind of limiting because of this. I can't remember which article it was that we read this week but one of them mentioned Internet still falling under the category of "computers" and how this wasn't a very accurate subject heading for it these days, or something like that. In my post I mentioned the term "anime" and how it's not used as a subject heading but "animated television programs -- Japan" is used. Well, nobody is going to call it that! Vocabulary is so key.
