Library Thing is my new friend

Tagged:  •    •    •

Hi Everyone,

I am already addicted to Library Thing. As I went along and searched for my favorite books, I had to remember to stop to get the rest of my homework done. What I really like about Library Thing is I keep thinking of practical uses for it. For example, my friends sometimes send out their booklists, but they send them as text on a Word doc. " Boo" (as they say in the Common Craft videos). But putting their booklists on Library Thing and sending out the link, now that's much better. And prettier too!

"What uses of delicious do you see your library/organization adopting?"

Berkeley READS Adult & Family Literacy Program has a webpage on the BPL site. Within this webpage is a list of Online Resources for Students and Tutors

If we had these resources plus some new ones on del.icio.us, and had a tag cloud embedded in our site, students could:

how can I use a wiki in my library?

"What types of implementations do you think would be particularly effective for your/a library or organization?"

In my library I can see library staff using wikis for training purposes:

In the computer lab, have the instructor show everyone how to use a wiki. (Like we have done in this course) a wiki is created and everyone can make their own page. Practical uses for wikis are taught and patrons can create their own. This would be especially effective for a bookclub or writing club.

Widgets in my library

“What are some ways that you as a librarian/info pro will make use of widgets?”

1. In my library’s literacy program we can create a start page: web portal that will introduce interesting, important, and fun things that are available on the Internet. A few widgets that come to mind for this are: weather channels, news, and social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. And since it is a literacy program we can include widgets of literacy blogs or “Blidgets”.

using multiple feed digests to get funding updates

Tagged:  •    •

After attending the Elluminate session tonight and practicing with multiple feeds digests, I realized I do have a use for this application in my library literacy program.

In literacy, we are all consumed with funding issues right now, as are most programs in libraries, and creating a  multiple feed digest to bring in feeds from various news sources would be helpful.

Protopage page

Considering the question, "What do you think of the idea of libraries creating public start page portals?," I think it's a fabulous idea! In fact, I created a fake start page for the Berkeley Public Library, where I volunteer. Here it is:

http://www.protopage.com/berkeleylibrary

password: berkeley

The start page is nowhere near complete, and doesn't look as nice as Dublin's (I wasn't sure how to insert buttons or images), but it's a start.

Researching on Twitter

Tagged:  •    •    •

I've discovered that I can do research on Twitter. This has been a great find as the information I have been seeking has not been available to me anywhere else.

My research project is about Trucker Buddies and the students they pen pal with. Trucker Buddy International has promised to put my call for stories in their newsletter, but waiting for contacts is difficult when I want the stories now. I recently heard that the newsletter will be published soon but in the mean time, I found that research on Twitter has brought me some positive results.
