So, I signed up for the Handheld Librarian conference (Thanks Genna!!). I got up early, went to the site, tested my audio/visual. All great. Then I shut down and walked the dog. I came back and couldn't get on when it started. Yikes! The site was inaccessible, so there was no way to find out what was going on or how to troubleshoot.
I found Clay Shirky's presentation from last month interesting and thought provoking. It's 15 minutes and he covers a lot of ground, but it made me bend my thinking in terms of social media usage and outreach. Reach out or have others reach in? How would a library do this? I'm still thinking about it . . . If anyone has posted this already, mea culpa - somehow I missed it.
Here is my twitter account:
Hi All - This is an interesting video of the impact that Michael Jackson passiing had on twitter and what people were focusing on. I am in no way making light of the loss of a talent, father, friend and son but since we are studying the uses and impact that web 2.0 can have I thought I would share this.
Last week, our Resource Sharing Alliance (RSA's online catalog is shared amongst nearly 200 libraries) went live with their Twhirl notification system. Who would have thought that the day after Twhirl went live at RSA, a storm would go through and take down our systems!
Okay, now I'm kind of freaking out about the group project topics. Where did everyone get these ready-made topics from? Did I miss that page? I'd like to do a project on Twitter or microblogging but I'm open to other topics. Is anything left? Is there anyone not in a group yet or any groups that need another member? Eeeeeee! Sorry for being a bit behind with this :(

For those who were interested in using Twitter for polling:
Perhaps American Idol will pick this up for next season.

I think Twitter is very useful in the LIS setting. Twitter is yet another way libraries can market what they have to offer their customers. Information can be pushed to followers and then the follower's opinions and responses can be tracked. Twitter is an excellent way to extend two-way communication with the public.
