Social Tagging in Libraries

Tagged:  •    •

What advantages to social tagging do you see for libraries?

There are many advantages to social tagging for libraries. The first is the ability to let the user manage library content. It can allow library patrons to keep track of items through tags generated by them and by other and can help users find things serendipitously through browsing.

Delicious Tagging

Here's the link to my Delicious profile; it's small, because it's new.  I really like using Stumble Upon to surf the web when I'm bored, but I don't think it has the potential to assist with organizing web pages for research the way Delicious does.

My delicious bookmarks can be found at http://delicious.com/csharifi

I've been using delicious for quite a while, so there are a lot of tags in there. I really love delicious, but until I listened to this week's lecture and read the readings, I wasn't using it to its full potential. I really like the tag bundles.

What uses of delicious do you see your library/organization adopting?

I believe what University of Pennsylvania Libraries did with their Penn Tags will take off and adopted not only in academics but also in public and special libraries. To lessen their dependence on Delicious - a third party service, UP was smart not only to put in place a delicious-like system on their own hosts, but also to look at open source systems to host the service, to make the entire service more efficient for their users and cost effective in the long run for the organization.

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but the five bookmarks I tagged LIBR246-11 have not showed up in my Google reader, even though I subscribed to the RSS feed for that tag. Hmm...
