Clay Shirky: How Social Media Can Make History

Tagged:  •    •

I found Clay Shirky's presentation from last month interesting and thought provoking.  It's 15 minutes and he covers a lot of ground, but it made me bend my thinking in terms of social media usage and outreach.  Reach out or have others reach in?  How would a library do this?  I'm still thinking about it . . .  If anyone has posted this already, mea culpa - somehow I missed it.

Web 2.0 movie pitch

Our hero, preferably a young hunk of the CW television variety (they're fairly interchangeable), is stuck at home nursing a football injury and can't leave his room. To add insult to injury, his parents have put him in charge of his precocious younger sister (Elle Fanning?) while they go on a weeklong cruise to Baja. His girlfriend (more CW cuties), trying to cheer him up, introduces him to Picfog which hooks him immediately.

Wikis or Blogs - Which One Should I Choose?

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

To the innocent Web 2.0 bystander the differences between wikis and blogs might not be that apparent.  Part of the problem is that people who are already unfamiliar with these applications cannot infer what the application does simply from its name.

Wiki?  Blog?

To some these words might sound like an alien language.  A better understanding of what these words mean is the first step to knowing their similarities and differences.

The Twitter effect

Hi All - This is an interesting video of the impact that Michael Jackson passiing had on twitter and what people were focusing on.  I am in no way making light of the loss of a talent, father, friend and son but since we are studying the uses and impact that web 2.0 can have I thought I would share this.

Introduction of Mary Poupart

Tagged:  •    •    •

Hi Everyone,

I'm Mary and I'm in my 3rd semester in the SLIS program.  Since being in the program, I've recognized the importance of online networking for the sake of one's education, career goals (and sanity).  I've lived in Santa Clara, Ca. for 25 years and have worked at several high-tech companies in the area.  I'm currently focussing on getting my MLIS degree so that hopefully my job prospects aren't as limited.  I'm looking forward to this class, to meeting new people and to learning about the many amazing web 2.0 features available to us.
