Rationale for Libraries using Social Networking Services

Tagged:  •    •

The library's decision to use Facebook and/or other Social Networking Services (SNS) should be situationally dependent on its primary users, stakeholders, the organization's mission and the value-added potential that the given service can contribute. If users and stakeholders are an Internet using population--i.e. higher education, or public libraries--then the case against SNS I think will become increasingly difficult to justify going forward. I think it will become inevitable if not imperative that these libraries use SNS.

Libraries on social networks

Tagged:  •    •

I have mixed feelings about libraries using social networks. I suppose it simplifies for me depending on if there is time for a staff member to be dedicated to keeping the information on the social networks up to date and relevant. If there is staff enough to make that happen, then adding social networking to a library's repetoire is a great thing. If not, then it might not be the best choice.

Do you think libraries should be on Facebook & other social networks - why or why not?

Hi All,

Although I haven't added into any networks yet, I have already found old high school friends! I didn't think I'd have this much fun with social networking-I'm usually too busy/lazy to keep up with them. But Facebook is fun!

I was with my 24 year old niece in Paris during spring break and she made my account! I must say I rarely look at it except to spy on my nieces and nephews. Ellyssa gave really good advice about leaving off your birth year. My niece put it in and I have taken it off but too late...I am probably the oldest person in the program (yea, me!). However, the pathetic senior ads that get put on the right are disgusting! I also feel a bit funny about friending classmates as this site seems a bit more private to me. So, I did the people in my group project that I could find.
