Last week, our Resource Sharing Alliance (RSA's online catalog is shared amongst nearly 200 libraries) went live with their Twhirl notification system. Who would have thought that the day after Twhirl went live at RSA, a storm would go through and take down our systems!

Twitter and LIS

I think Twitter is very useful in the LIS setting.  Twitter is yet another way libraries can market what they have to offer their customers.  Information can be pushed to followers and then the follower's opinions and responses can be tracked.  Twitter is an excellent way to extend two-way communication with the public.

Using Twitter for Generating User Feedback

What are some other ways (besides those we looked at in the lecture) that you think libraries could make use of Twitter and microblogging apps?

Libraries can also use Twitter to generate feedback from patrons. As far as I know, there are two ways to do that:

- Libraries can simply tweet a question and ask people to reply. Here is an example of Yale Science Libraries doing this:

I think the major power of microblogging applications such as Twitter for libraries is outreach.
